About us

APSamples is a project created by the founder of Bearlics Datacentre Services (BDS). BDS provides servers and storage for the site, and started off as a hobby project in 2024 before the site (https://bds.bearlics.com) was launched in early 2026.

Technical details

The database runs on a HP z440 I got for free in 2024 with 16GB of RAM (not free). The reverse proxy I use runs on a $20 computer I got from a Savers and fitted with a bunch of hard drives. It has an AMD FX-6300 processor with six cores (~2012) and 16GB DDR3. The backend runs on a Dell PowerEdge R520 (along with the savers computer and z440, bought in 2024) with 96GB DDR3. I use a Cisco Catalyst C2960x with four 1gb SFP ports and 48 1GbE RJ45 ports as my network switch. I use an old Optiplex 7020 as my router for port forwarding. All computer systems mentioned use Proxmox VE for running VMs. Am also using a $250 48U Dell server rack I got last year which was a pain to transport into my basement. Since all of these computers are ancient and power hogs (the R520 uses 140 watts at idle and sounds like a jet engine taking off), the most expensive part (aside from RAM of course) of running the site is electricity at ~$40 per month.
